In short: Renting often feels like a barrier to gardening, but you don't need a backyard to grow a bounty. By upcycling food-grade buckets and polystyrene boxes, you can create a self-watering system that slashes water usage and turns kitchen scraps into a massive compost yield.

For renters like Steve and Rabea North in Melbourne, the challenge of gardening is portability and sustainability. Their solution involves repurposing items destined for landfill, such as 10-litre food-grade buckets and polystyrene broccoli boxes, into 'wicking beds.' These are self-watering containers that can be constructed for just $5 to $10 each, offering a way to grow vegetables using roughly half the water and effort required by conventional pots.

The mechanism of a wicking bed relies on a reservoir at the base. To build one, you use a recycled container, geotextile weed mat, and a combination of soil and compost. A poly pipe system is installed to manage water levels, including a 23mm overflow hole positioned about two inches from the base. The bottom of the bed is filled with scoria up to the drainage level, covered by the geotextile, and then topped with a two-part soil and one-part compost mix.

Complementing the garden is a highly efficient, low-maintenance composting system. Using 20-litre outdoor buckets and 10-litre indoor kitchen buckets, the process involves layering food scraps with a carbon source like sawdust or shredded newspaper. This 'set and forget' method, which requires only about 15 minutes of work per week, can produce over half a ton of compost annually. When managed correctly, this system can reduce a household's landfill waste by half, proving that even small-scale, temporary living spaces can support productive, circular ecosystems.
