How to ensure your garden seedlings survive the transition from shop to soil
In short: Buying seedlings is only half the battle. Many beginners lose their plants during the delicate transition from a controlled shop environment to the unpredictable outdoors. To ensure your garden thrives, you must master the art of hardening them up, minimizing root disturbance, and selecting the right companions.
Success begins before the plant ever touches the soil. When selecting seedlings, avoid those that appear 'leggy' or have outgrown their punnets, as these are unlikely to transplant successfully. Instead, look for young, vigorous specimens that appear fresh and healthy. If your plants have been raised in a controlled climate, such as a glasshouse, they will be relatively soft and require a period of 'hardening up' to acclimatise to the elements.
This acclimatisation process involves leaving the seedlings outside on a surface like a table for about a week. During this time, you must monitor them closely, as they are prone to drying out quickly. When it comes time to plant, timing is everything. Avoid planting on extremely hot days; instead, wait for milder weather. For summer crops, ensure the threat of frost has completely passed before putting them in the ground.
The physical act of planting requires precision to prevent shock. Before removing plants from their punnets, water them gently to loosen the soil. When handling them, aim to keep root disturbance to an absolute minimum. For certain varieties, like tomatoes, planting them deeper than their original soil level can encourage more root development along the stem, which aids fruiting. You can also use companion planting, such as placing basil with tomatoes, to enhance growth. Finally, to protect vulnerable young plants from pests like earwigs or slaters, consider using old plastic pots with the bases removed as physical barriers until the plants are strong enough to resist them.
