Turn your garden into a self-sustaining ecosystem using plants as tools
In short: Plants do much more than provide food or beauty. By strategically using specific species, you can naturally fumigate soil against pests, fix nitrogen for future crops, and accelerate composting, effectively turning your garden into a self-regulating system that reduces the need for expensive chemical inputs.
Nematodes are a significant threat to food gardens, often causing lumpy swellings or tumors on roots that prevent plants from absorbing water and nutrients. While these lesions are sometimes mistaken for beneficial nodules, they are actually debilitating. To combat them organically, gardeners can use 'break crops' like corn (Zea mays), which provide no nutrition to the pests, causing them to starve. Alternatively, certain marigolds can act as a natural fumigant. While French Marigolds (Tagetes patula) have been used successfully, the Southern Cone Marigold (Tagetes minuta) is noted for being even more effective at controlling these pests.
To use marigolds as a soil treatment, the plants must be uprooted, chopped, and dug into the topsoil. Crucially, the area must be kept damp for three weeks; this moisture allows the plant to release the gas necessary to kill the nematodes. If the soil dries out during this period, the process will fail. This organic approach offers a choice to gardeners who prefer to avoid chemical pesticides entirely.
Beyond pest control, plants can actively improve soil fertility. Legumes, such as chickpeas (Cicer arietinum), host nitrogen-fixing bacteria within nodules on their roots. These bacteria convert atmospheric nitrogen into nitrates, which become available to subsequent plants once the roots rot. This process can even reduce the need for external fertilizers like poultry manure. Even common weeds can serve a purpose; for instance, Warrigal Greens (Tetragonia tetragonioides) can act as a compost accelerator when added to a heap, speeding up the breakdown process.
