A hidden Sydney botanical treasure reveals how past mistakes can foster future growth
In short: Tucked away in Manly, a heritage garden founded in 1884 serves as a living time capsule. Once the site of massive wildflower shows that nearly depleted the local flora, the space has transformed into a sanctuary for rare species, maintained entirely by a dedicated team of local volunteers.
Ivanhoe Park, located on Sydney's northern beaches, houses a botanical collection that dates back to 1884. During the late 19th century, the site hosted the Manly Wildflower Show, an event that attracted 3,000 visitors annually. At the time, organisers would clear the area to harvest native flowers for display, a practice that unknowingly damaged the local ecosystem. According to Lloyd Keen, president of the Friends of Ivanhoe Park, the cessation of these shows was the best event in the garden's history, as it allowed the native wildflowers to finally recover and flourish.
Today, the garden is a heritage-listed site containing over 400 plants across 92 species. The collection includes century-old legacy trees such as figs, pines, and Sydney red gums, alongside an international array of specimens from Africa and North and South America. Volunteer Lois notes that the garden features four species of Araucaria and five species of fig. As Sydney's climate shifts toward a more subtropical environment, these rainforest trees may prove to be the most resilient survivors, highlighting the site's importance as a repository of botanical heritage.
Beyond its historical significance, the garden serves the community through inclusive design. A dedicated sensory garden features raised beds, allowing visitors with varying levels of mobility or those in wheelchairs to engage with the plants without needing to kneel. By incorporating diverse textures, fragrances, and colors, the volunteers ensure the space remains accessible to all. The ongoing efforts of the Friends of Ivanhoe Park demonstrate how community stewardship can preserve fragile ecosystems while creating public spaces that educate and inspire, proving that significant history often hides in plain sight.
