How one acre of inner city land feeds an entire school

Touring an inner city school with an award-winning gardening program | Gardening Australia · 8:15 · Video: Gardening Australia · Watch at the source

In short: Step inside The Farm, an award-winning school gardening program where students manage a productive one-acre site to supply their canteen and classrooms.

Established in the 1980s, this program allows students to work toward a certificate of horticulture. Under the guidance of teacher Jak Dunstan, students maintain the farm and its tools, and even manage a modern hydroponics setup in a hothouse.

The impact is measurable: the program has already harvested more than 160kg of vegetables. Beyond providing food for students and staff, the initiative has inspired many former pupils to pursue professional careers in the horticultural field.
