How Ariana DeBose Transformed From A Reality TV Contestant To An Oscar-Winning Icon
In short: Ariana DeBose is a triple threat whose journey from early dance competitions to the Broadway stage culminated in a historic Academy Award win. Her path reflects a deep commitment to craft, moving from ensemble roles in smash hits like Hamilton to commanding the screen in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story.
Born in 1991 in Wilmington, North Carolina, Ariana DeBose was raised by her mother, a teacher. Her artistic foundation began early; she started dance classes at age three and was exposed to a diverse range of music and art through local festivals. By age 18, she made her television debut as a contestant on the 2009 season of So You Think You Can Dance. Although she reached the top 20, she was eliminated in the first round, a setback that preceded her move to New York City to pursue a career in musical theater.
DeBose’s Broadway career began in 2012 with Bring It On: The Musical. She subsequently appeared in Motown: The Musical and Pippin before joining the original cast of Hamilton in 2015. In Hamilton, she played the ensemble role of 'the Bullet,' a character who moves in slow motion across the stage to represent the force that kills Alexander Hamilton. Her transition to film was marked by her role as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s 2021 adaptation of West Side Story, a part she initially hesitated to pursue.
The role of Anita proved to be a career-defining breakthrough. DeBose won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance, becoming the first Afro-Latina and the first openly queer woman of color to win an Oscar for acting. Beyond her film success, she has become a prominent host, leading the Tony Awards ceremony in 2022, 2023, and 2024. Her work continues to span genres, from the musical parody series Schmigadoon! to voicing the lead character in the 2023 animated film Wish.
