In short: The Chinese electric vehicle sector is not merely growing; it is reshaping global automotive standards. With sales projections showing electric vehicles comprising over half of the market by 2025, the country's influence spans production, sales, and the underlying battery technology. Understanding this scale is key to grasping the future of personal mobility.

The scale of the electric vehicle (EV) industry in China is unprecedented globally. In 2024, the nation accounted for more than 70% of worldwide EV production and 67% of global sales. Furthermore, China is set to export over 2.62 million EVs in 2025. Looking at the passenger vehicle segment, China sold an estimated 16.49 million passenger EVs in 2025, with electric vehicles making up 51% of all vehicle sales that year. This represents a massive shift from 2020, when plug-in electric vehicles (BEV and PHEV) accounted for only 6.3% of total sales, compared to 47.9% in 2024.

This dominance is evident across vehicle types. China leads the electric bus and light commercial vehicle markets, reporting over 500,000 buses—representing 95% of the global stock—and recording 447,000 commercial EVs sold in 2023. The underlying battery infrastructure is equally concentrated, as EV batteries make up about one-third of the cost of EVs, and approximately 80% of the world's lithium-ion batteries are used in EVs, with major Chinese players like CATL and BYD FinDreams leading the charge.

The competitive landscape is characterized by rapid consolidation and deep technological integration. While foreign firms like Tesla established major hubs, such as its Shanghai Gigafactory, Chinese domestic players have demonstrated overwhelming market power. For instance, in 2021, BYD Auto and SAIC Motor together occupied 5 out of the top 7 spots in the plug-in market. Moreover, the industry's growth is fueling technological advancement, with research showing a majority of deep learning contributions in the EV domain originating from China between 2015 and 2025.

The sheer volume of vehicles also presents an environmental challenge. China has seen a dramatic increase in end-of-life vehicle (ELV) generation, escalating nearly 45-fold between 2000 and 2025, positioning it as the largest ELV generator after the US since 2020. This necessitates global efforts to build a circular economy for EVs, especially given the rapid transition toward electric power sources.
