Why industrial waste might be the secret to better, more sustainable hand sanitizer
In short: Hand sanitizer is a staple of modern hygiene, but its production often relies on virgin ingredients. Recent research suggests that crude glycerol, a byproduct of industrial processes like biodiesel manufacturing, can be purified and repurposed to create effective, high-viscosity gels that are both sustainable and gentle on the skin.
Hand sanitizer, or hand antiseptic, serves as a vital tool for killing microorganisms when soap and water are unavailable. While alcohol-based versions—typically containing 60% to 95% ethanol or isopropyl alcohol—are the gold standard for healthcare settings, they are not universal panaceas. They struggle against spores, norovirus, and Clostridioides difficile, and their efficacy drops significantly if hands are visibly soiled, greasy, or slimy.
To improve the user experience and prevent the skin dryness associated with frequent use, manufacturers often add humectants like glycerol. A recent study explored a more circular approach by purifying crude glycerol—a byproduct of industrial biodiesel production—using chemical treatments and activated charcoal. This purified glycerol was successfully integrated into a hand sanitizer formulation alongside water, hydroxyethylcellulose, and methylparaben-ethanol. The resulting gel maintained a slightly acidic pH of 5.7 and demonstrated excellent spreadability despite its high viscosity.
The science of sanitization is precise. Alcohol works by denaturing proteins and lysing cells, a process that requires sufficient exposure time—at least 10 to 15 seconds—and adequate concentration. If the alcohol content falls below 60%, or if the volume applied is too low, the sanitizer fails to perform its job. Furthermore, the addition of ingredients like methyl salicylate, which can be aggregated at concentrations up to 50%, opens new doors for designing formulations with specific biological activities. By turning industrial waste into high-quality ingredients, researchers are proving that the future of hygiene may lie in better resource management.
