How geography shapes the geography of the human mind
In short: Mental health is often treated as an individual struggle, but data suggests it is deeply tied to where we live. From the Andean peaks of Colombia to the digital borders of Chile, territoriality dictates both the prevalence of anxiety and the legal sovereignty of our own thoughts.
In Colombia, anxiety disorders represent a significant and growing public health burden, with an estimated 1,266,489 disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) attributed to them between 2016 and 2022. However, this burden is not distributed equally. A longitudinal study revealed marked territorial inequalities: the highest concentrations of anxiety are found in the Andean region—specifically in Risaralda, Caldas, and Bogotá, D.C.—while the Amazonian and Orinoquía territories show lower rates. This suggests that regional socioeconomic or environmental factors play a critical role in mental health outcomes.
The scale of the issue is accelerating. Between 2016 and 2022, the national age-standardized DALY rate for anxiety disorders jumped from 177.9 per 100,000 population to 687.4 per 100,000, representing an annual percent change of 25.41%. While the data highlights a clear trend of increasing morbidity, researchers note a crucial limitation: these figures reflect treated cases within the health system rather than the total population prevalence.
Beyond physical health, the concept of 'territoriality' is expanding into the cognitive realm. Chile recently became the first country to constitutionally amend 'neurorights.' While some critics view this as a simple legal extension, others argue it functions as a form of 'cognitive sovereignty.' This framework suggests that the state is asserting authority over the mental domains of its population to protect against foreign neurotechnological influence, effectively treating the human mind as a territory to be defended against technological asymmetry.
