The kob: a stocky antelope built for speed and social survival
In short: While many antelopes rely on camouflage to hide in dense brush, the kob has evolved for the opposite strategy. This stocky African antelope thrives in open floodplains, trading concealment for a build designed for high-speed endurance and complex social dynamics across the savanna.
The kob (Kobus kob) belongs to the Reduncini tribe, a group of ruminants that includes other notable species like the waterbuck and reedbuck. Unlike the solitary browsers of closed habitats—which are often small, rounded, and adapted for dodging through thickets—kobs are quintessential open-habitat specialists. They are built for speed, characterized by level backs and long, equally developed limbs that allow them to navigate the vast grasslands of the northern savanna.
Their survival strategy is dictated by water and grass. Kobs are diurnal but remain inactive during the peak heat of the day, moving to pastures where they keep short grasses trimmed. Because they are highly dependent on fresh water, their movements are predictable; they do not wander into arid regions, instead traveling hundreds of kilometers in flooded areas or walking over 10 kilometers to reach water during the dry season. Spanning from western Senegal to the eastern Ethiopian border, this reliance produces a distinct environmental impact throughout their habitat.
Socially, kobs are gregarious, often forming groups of five to forty individuals. These groups are typically segregated by sex, consisting of either females with calves or all-male cohorts. While the species is diverse, the white-eared kob (Kobus kob leucotis) stands out as a distinct variation; found in the Sudd region, these individuals are strikingly dark and participate in large-scale migrations, contrasting with the typical golden to reddish-brown pelage of their relatives.
