In short: While many assume LGBTQ+ identities are inherently tied to left-wing politics, a diverse 'gay right' has existed for over 50 years. From center-right advocacy to far-right nationalism, these movements challenge the sociological assumption that sexual minority status and conservative ideology are mutually exclusive.

The perception of LGBTQ+ individuals as inherently liberal is a relatively recent phenomenon. Throughout the 1980s and '90s, a mutual struggle against the Religious Right primarily unified this group, placing both sides at opposite ends of American political life. Because this link is so salient, some sociologists have even designed quantitative measures that define 'pro-gay' stances as liberal by default.

However, research shows that gay people with right-wing politics are a significant reality. In the United States alone, only about one in five LGB people identify as conservative. Over fifty years, these people have established diverse bodies in 13+ nations, creating global partnerships such as the European Centre-Right LGBT Alliance. The spectrum of these organizations is vast: some, like the US Log Cabin Republicans or the UK LGBTories, support major center-right parties, while others, such as the Swedish GaySVP or the US National Socialist League, are classified as far-right or neo-Nazi.

Scholars suggest this 'epistemology of ignorance' exists because academic history has often deliberately hidden narratives that do not fit a progressive mold, such as the historical relationship between homosexuality and fascism. To understand these diverse groups, researchers use a two-axis framework: whether an organization believes there should be specific 'gay interests,' and if so, how those interests align with broader right-wing goals. This reveals that there is no single 'gay right' but rather a heterogeneous phenomenon where sexuality intersects with class, nationalism, and systems justification.
