In short: Li Shangfu ascended to the pinnacle of Chinese military power as a specialist in aerospace technology, only to be purged in a stunning political collapse. His rapid trajectory from satellite technician to State Councillor highlights the high stakes of China's defense modernization and the brutal reality of internal party discipline.

Li Shangfu’s career was defined by his expertise in aerospace and high-tech warfare. After graduating in 1982, he became a technician for the Xichang Satellite Launch Center within the People's Liberation Army (PLA), where he spent more than thirty years overseeing rocket missions like the 2010 Chang'e 2 lunar probe. His technical background paved the way for his elevation to leadership roles within the Strategic Support Force—a branch dedicated to cyberspace and space operations—and eventually to his appointment as China's 13th Minister of National Defense in March 2023.

His tenure was marked by a strategic pivot toward aerospace prioritization amidst intensifying technological competition with the United States. During his brief time in office, Li engaged in high-level diplomacy, meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. However, his position became precarious as he faced significant international pressure; he was sanctioned by the U.S. government under CAATSA for transactions involving Russian military equipment, specifically Su-35 aircraft and S-400 missile systems.

The collapse of Li's career was swift. After disappearing from public view in August 2023, he was removed from office in October 2023, becoming the shortest-serving defense minister in the history of the People's Republic of China. By June 2024, he was expelled from the CCP for corruption and bribery. A death penalty with a two-year stay was handed down in May 2026, destined to become a permanent life sentence without parole after that period ends. The state characterized his actions as a 'collapse of faith' and a betrayal of party principles.
