Your genetic code sets an expiration date on your existence
In short: While we often blame accidents or disease for the end of life, biology suggests a deeper ceiling exists. Your maximum lifespan is a theoretical limit dictated by heredity—a hardcoded set of instructions that determines how long a species can survive even under perfect conditions.
Biologists distinguish between 'average life span' and 'maximum life span.' While the former is a statistical average based on mortality data, the maximum lifespan is a theoretical limit. It represents the age beyond which a species cannot live, regardless of how favorable the environment might be. Because this exact value is often unknown, scientists frequently estimate it based on the longest-lived individuals ever recorded for that specific species.
The mechanism behind this limit is primarily hereditary. Genetic material contains the blueprints for aging processes; however, environmental factors can still diminish an organism's ability to reach its genetic potential. In contrast, 'longevity' refers only to the characteristics of exceptionally long-lived members of a population—such as their specific health conditions or infirmities—rather than the biological ceiling of the species itself.
Research into mammalian cells offers a glimpse into these mechanisms. Studies on primary fibroblasts across ten different species show that DNA repair accuracy correlates with lifespan. Species with longer lifespans tend to have better capacities for repairing somatic mutations, suggesting that genome instability is a primary hallmark of aging. While cell division limits like the Hayflick limit exist, they do not strictly control total lifespan in all cases.
For humans, these biological boundaries are being pushed by external interventions. Since the 1960s, mortality rates for those over 80 have decreased by about 1.5% per year due to medical and public-health efforts. However, while we can improve average life expectancy through nutrition and healthcare, reaching the ultimate maximum lifespan remains a matter of overcoming fundamental biological 'rates of aging.'
