The 1839 uprising that nearly ended in a hanging.
In short: In 1839, 4,000 people marched on Newport, Wales, demanding the right to vote. It was the last large-scale armed rising in the country. What followed was a chaotic, bloody confrontation that left the leaders facing the ultimate penalty: to be hanged, drawn, and quartered.
The Newport Rising was fueled by the Chartist movement, which sought universal suffrage and a secret ballot. Tensions peaked in 1839 after the House of Commons rejected the first People's Charter on July 12 and the conviction of Chartist leader Henry Vincent on August 2. By November 4, approximately 4,000 sympathizers—including many coal-miners armed with home-made pikes and bludgeons—marched on the town to liberate fellow prisoners held at the Westgate Hotel.
The confrontation was marked by extreme ambiguity. While the Chartist movement was chaotic and emotions were high, the exact reason for the violence remains opaque. Some suggest it stemmed from leader John Frost's personal animus toward the Newport establishment, while others point to his ambivalence regarding the violence of his followers. On the morning of November 4, the columns arrived at the hotel, where soldiers of the 45th Regiment of Foot were stationed to protect the police. A brief, violent battle ensued, with reports conflicting on who fired first.
The military's superior firepower proved decisive. Between 10 and 24 Chartists were killed, and upwards of 50 were wounded. The leaders—Frost, Zephaniah Williams, and William Jones—were convicted of high treason and sentenced to be hanged, drawn, and quartered, the last such sentences in England and Wales. However, following a nationwide petition and direct lobbying of the Home Secretary, the sentences were commuted to transportation for life. While the establishment viewed the rising as proof of Chartist violence, the movement remained buoyant until 1842, with the Newport rebels becoming symbols of martyrdom for the working class.
