From a 19th-century plantation to a top-ranked medical pipeline
In short: Oakwood University stands as a unique intersection of faith, history, and high-level academic achievement. Founded on the site of a former plantation, it has evolved into a premier pipeline for medical education, balancing a legacy of spiritual direction with elite modern success in STEM and healthcare.
Oakwood University's origins are rooted in the post-Civil War era. In January 1896, a committee appointed by the Seventh-day Adventist Church purchased a 360-acre plantation for $6,700—the same land once owned by the enslavers of Dred Scott. The institution was founded as Oakwood Industrial School to provide vocational education and spiritual guidance to freed African Americans. Early students were required to perform manual labor, such as farm work or laundry, to pay for their tuition.
The university's trajectory was shaped by significant student activism. In 1931, students went on strike to protest heavy workloads, low wages, and racial segregation. Their efforts led to the recruitment of more African American faculty and the appointment of James L. Moran as the school's first African American president in 1932. Despite the church's conservative stance during the 1950s and 1960s civil rights movement, the school notably hosted Martin Luther King Jr. in 1962, making it the only institution in Huntsville to do so at that time.
Today, Oakwood is a powerhouse of academic and athletic distinction. It is ranked No. 15 in the top medical programs in Alabama by Med-Colleges.com, establishing itself as a leader in preparing undergraduate applicants for medical school. Strong connections exist between the institution and the space sector, as it became the initial HBCU to join a Mentor-Protégé signing deal with Science Applications International Corp. under NASA. (SAIC) in 2009.
