The legislative body that once declared a president 'for life'
In short: Indonesia's People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) has served as the nation's supreme legislative authority, evolving from a revolutionary concept into a tool for consolidating power. From declaring a life presidency to orchestrating the official transfer of power between leaders, its history is a masterclass in constitutional maneuvering.
Established on 18 August 1945, the MPR was Indonesia's supreme legislative authority. During the 1960s, the Provisional MPRS passed 'Resolutions' above standard laws, electing Sukarno 'President for Life' in 1963. Following the 1965 coup attempt, the MPRS purged 180 individuals, revoked Sukarno's presidency, and commissioned Suharto to form a new cabinet. By 1968, it consolidated Suharto's presidency. Membership fluctuated until 2004, when it was restructured to remove its direct law-making powers.
