The dynastic drama of Portugal's quest to restore a lost throne
In short: Portugal has been a monarchy since 1143, but the path to its restoration is paved with civil wars, assassinations, and bitter family disputes. Today, the People's Monarchist Party navigates a complex web of legitimacy, debating which royal house truly holds the keys to the past.
The People's Monarchist Party (PPM) was founded in 1974 following the Carnation Revolution to unify monarchist forces. While the party seeks to restore the monarchy, it has faced internal schisms over which lineage is legitimate. Since 2008, the PPM has argued that the House of Braganza—the traditional claimants—are illegitimate, instead supporting the House of Loulé. This internal rift mirrors a deeper historical conflict: the 1828-1834 civil war between the Miguelists (traditionalists) and Constitutionalists. The Miguelists supported the absolutist Miguel I, who usurped power from his niece Maria II, arguing that women could not inherit the throne.
The transition to a republic in 1910 followed a period of intense instability, including a 1908 republican massacre of the royal family. Although the monarchy was toppled, monarchist sentiment persisted in the military, leading to the short-lived 'Monarchy of the North' in 1919. During the subsequent Estado Novo dictatorship, the regime briefly toyed with a ceremonial monarchy in 1951 but ultimately chose a rigged election, a move the PPM viewed as a betrayal. This era cemented the PPM as a vocal opponent of the dictatorship, seeking a restoration based on historical continuity.
In recent decades, the PPM has oscillated between being a marginal conservative force and a localized regional power. After a period of fading into obscurity in the 1990s, the party found a niche in the Azores. Under leader Paulo Estêvão, it pivoted to a populist, regionalist focus, advocating for municipal devolution and a distinct Azorean identity. Despite these shifts, the party remains a small electoral player, often struggling to balance its core monarchist doctrine with the practicalities of modern coalition politics.
