In short: When corporations or states adopt LGBTQ+ symbols, it often looks like progress. But beneath the rainbow flags lies a calculated strategy known as pinkwashing: using superficial sympathy for sexual minorities to mask political agendas, distract from social unrest, or justify discriminatory policies.

The term 'pinkwashing'—a play on 'greenwashing'—emerged around 2010 to describe the use of LGBTQ+ rights as a public relations tool. It is closely linked to 'homonationalism,' a concept described by scholars like Jasbir P_uar, where states selectively support sexual minorities to justify racism, xenophobia, or colonial violence. In this framework, the visibility of queer identities is used to portray a nation as 'civilized' while delegitimizing others as 'backward.'

The practice manifests in diverse geopolitical contexts. In France, critics argue that framing LGBTQ+ rights as 'French values' helps deflect attention from domestic unrest. In Malta, the rapid ascent to the top of the ILGA-Europe Rainbow Index since 2015 has been analyzed alongside rising perceptions of corruption and the 2017 assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. Similarly, in Nepal, the government's marketing of the country as a 'beacon of LGBT rights' is criticized for overshadowing failures to address issues like child exploitation and caste discrimination.

Beyond state politics, 'rainbow capitalism' represents a commercial dimension of pinkwashing. In the United States, author Stephan Dahl notes that much of this involves selling pride merchandise that provides no actual legal or social change for the community. Even in India, where queer representation in advertising increased after the 2018 scrapping of Section 377, researchers note an ambivalence: while these ads can destigmatize identities, they often exist as 'negotiated visibility,' where commercial profit and cultural inclusion coexist.
