In short: Researchers who analyzed global mortality data from 2020 to 2021 found that the COVID-19 pandemic caused approximately 18.2 million excess deaths worldwide. This figure is significantly higher than the 5.94 million deaths officially reported as being caused by the virus during that two-year period.

The study used an ensemble of models to estimate expected mortality across 191 countries and territories, accounting for factors like healthcare quality and pandemic-related variables. By comparing observed deaths to these expectations, the team identified that the pandemic's impact was most severe in regions like South Asia, North Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe.

A major limitation of this research is that it cannot distinguish between deaths caused directly by SARS-CoV-2 infection and those resulting from indirect consequences of the pandemic, such as overwhelmed healthcare systems.

Why it matters: Official death tolls often undercount the true human cost of a pandemic, highlighting the need for better global health monitoring.
