Wearable activity trackers can increase daily steps and improve body composition
In short: An umbrella review of 39 meta-analyses involving 163,992 participants found that wearable activity trackers can effectively increase physical activity. The analysis suggested that using these devices is associated with approximately 1,800 extra steps per day, 40 minutes more walking daily, and reductions of about 1 kg in body weight.
Researchers synthesized data from numerous systematic reviews to evaluate how trackers affect both healthy and clinical populations. While the findings showed improvements in fitness and body composition, the effects on blood pressure, cholesterol, and pain were typically small or non-significant. The review's scope was limited to existing meta-analyses and systematic reviews rather than primary individual studies.
Why it matters: Wearable trackers may help increase daily movement and aid in weight management.
