In short: Tracing its lineage to 1934, the Royal Malaysian Air Force has transformed from a small auxiliary unit into a sophisticated force. Today, it balances Western and Russian technology, maintains specialized ground and special forces, and manages complex procurement programs to secure the nation's airspace in an evolving geopolitical landscape.

The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) traces its origins to the Malayan Auxiliary Air Force, established in 1934 under the British Royal Air Force. Following the dissolution of its predecessor units during the Japanese advance in 1942, the force was re-established in 1950 during the Malayan Emergency. It officially became the Royal Federation of Malaya Air Force on June 2, 1958, a date still celebrated annually as RMAF Day. The transition to the modern Royal Malaysian Air Force occurred on September 16, 1963, coinciding with the formation of Malaysia.

Modernization has been a hallmark of the RMAF, particularly following the withdrawal of British forces in 1971. The force historically relied on Western aircraft, such as the Northrop F-5E Tiger-II and the F/A-18D Hornet. However, to circumvent technology restrictions, the RMAF has increasingly diversified its procurement, notably acquiring Russian-made MiG-29s and Su-30MKMs. These acquisitions reflect a strategic shift to maintain air superiority, even as ambitious Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MRCA) programs have faced indefinite delays due to budget constraints.

Beyond aviation, the RMAF maintains a robust ground presence. The RMAF Regiment, established in 1980, serves as the primary ground formation, housing the special forces unit PASKAU. PASKAU, formed in 1996, specializes in combat search and rescue, counter-terrorism, and airbase protection. The RMAF also operates specialized units like the RMAF Provost and the RMAF Ground Base Air Defence, ensuring that the force remains a comprehensive military entity capable of protecting radar installations and vital assets across its various airbases.
