In short: Ticks do not jump or fly; they wait on grass, sensing your heat and breath to hitch a ride. While most bites are painless and harmless, these parasites can transmit serious pathogens. Understanding their questing behavior and mastering safe removal techniques is your best defense against tick-borne illness.

Ticks are highly specialized parasites that utilize a behavior known as questing to find hosts. By anchoring themselves to leaves or grass with their rear legs, they extend their front limbs to latch onto passing animals or humans. Once attached, they often secrete an anesthetic in their saliva, allowing them to feed on blood for minutes or even days without the host noticing. This stealthy feeding mechanism is how they transmit various bacteria, viruses, and parasites.

The risk of contracting a serious infection, such as tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), remains very low in many regions, including the UK. However, as tick populations expand into new areas due to climate change and shifting host habitats, vigilance is essential. TBE, for instance, can cause flu-like symptoms or, in rare cases, severe neurological issues like seizures or confusion. Because many tick-borne diseases present with similar, non-specific symptoms, diagnosis can be challenging for healthcare providers.

Prevention is the most effective strategy. When outdoors, wearing light-colored clothing makes it easier to spot ticks, while using insect repellents containing DEET provides an additional layer of protection. If you find a tick, the priority is safe removal: use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the parasite as close to the skin as possible and pull upward firmly. Avoid crushing the tick, as this can increase the risk of infection. If you develop symptoms like a high temperature, muscle aches, or a rash within a month of a bite, seek medical advice promptly.
