WHO called tobacco the top preventable cause of death
Seventy-nine Nicotiana species exist, but commerce runs on N. tabacum. Nicotine makes tobacco one of the world's most used recreational drugs, and in 2008 the World Health Organization named tobacco use the single greatest preventable cause of death on Earth.
Dried leaves feed cigarettes, cigars, pipes, shisha, snuff, chew, dip, and snus. English tobacco likely traces through Spanish tabaco partly to Taíno words for leaf rolls or Y-shaped sniffing pipes, though Tabasco and other etymologies compete. Indigenous American cultivation reaches back to 1400–1000 BCE in Mexico; Northeast Woodlands peoples traded pouch tobacco and smoked to seal treaties, many traditions treating the plant as a Creator's gift rather than a commodity. Europeans turned that sacred leaf into empire cash: Hernández brought seed to Spain in 1559 under Philip II; Jamestown exported it as currency that "saved" Virginia, entangled with Caribbean slavery.
By 1700 European and colonial production for smoking and snuff was a major industry; Cuban cigars later became world-famous. James Bonsack's late-nineteenth-century cigarette machine scaled output until twentieth-century science tied tobacco to cancer and cardiopulmonary disease, culminating in the U.S. 1998 Master Settlement Agreement restricting marketing. Brown & Williamson's Y1 strain in the 1970s nearly doubled nicotine content to about 6.5 percent, prompting 1990s FDA accusations of manipulation. WHO's 2003 Framework Convention drew 168 countries into control treaties; COVID-era risk fears also nudged some smokers to quit.
Botanically a nightshade, tobacco packs far more insecticidal nicotine than most relatives, yet beetles and moths still ravage stored leaf. Cultivation moved from broadcast seed to cloth-covered frames after flea beetles destroyed half of U.S. crops in 1876. Whatever ceremonial respect Native advocates still urge, commercial combustion remains a leading driver of heart, liver, lung, and cancer mortality—the public-health verdict the sources record, not a prescription for any individual.
