In short: In the Norfolk and Waveney Integrated Care System, health is not distributed equally. A recent study reveals that life expectancy can swing by decades between neighboring areas, driven by a complex web of income, social isolation, and physical activity levels.

By analyzing 128 Middle Layer Super Output Areas, researchers found that the gap in health between different neighborhoods is staggering. In 2021, the estimated HLE for men ranged from 52 to 73 years, while for women, it spanned from 56 to 74 years. This reveals a disparity of 21 years for men and 18 years for women across the region.

The drivers of these inequalities are both economic and behavioral. Higher weekly income shows a strong correlation with longevity; specifically, an increase of £100 in weekly income is associated with an additional 4.4 years of HLE at birth for males and 4.6 years for females. At age 65, this same £100 increase is linked to 1.7 more years for men and 2.0 more years for women. Conversely, social and lifestyle factors like physical inactivity and a higher percentage of older adults living alone are linked to lower HLE.

While this study utilized 2021 UK Census data to examine ten specific risk factors—including air pollution, road casualties, and diet—the researchers note that the scope could be even broader. They suggest that more precise local data on exposures like smoking could further refine our understanding of these health inequalities. The ultimate goal of such granular mapping is to allow public health organizations to identify high-risk areas and implement targeted, cost-effective interventions where they are needed most.
