In short: The 14K triad didn't start as a criminal enterprise; it began as a political resistance group. Born from the ashes of the Chinese Civil War, it transformed from a loyalist militia into one of the world's most violent and expansive organized crime syndicates, pioneering the

In Guangzhou, China, Kuomintang Lieutenant-General Kot Siu-wong established the 14K during 1945. Originally, it served as an anti-Communist action group. The name '14K' is attributed to the fourteen original members who were part of the Kuomintang, though other theories suggest it refers to a former headquarters' road number (14) and the district of Kowloon (K).

Following the Communist victory in 1949, the group relocated to British Hong Kong. It quickly pivoted to illicit trade, becoming a primary distributor of opium grown by allies in Burma. By establishing smuggling networks in the "Golden Triangle," the 14K became pioneers in the international narcotics trade, shipping opium to Europe and North America.

Today, the 14K is the world's second-largest triad group, with approximately 20,000 members. While it maintains a China-centric focus, it operates globally. In the Netherlands, it established a narcotics route in 1987, while in Japan, it has maintained branches with at least 1,000 members each since the 1980s. Its reach extends to the United States, Canada, Australia, and even into the manufacturing of methamphetamine for the Sinaloa Cartel.

Despite its size, the 14K is characterized by factional violence. No single "dragonhead" can govern all its global subgroups, leading to out-of-control internal conflicts. Its operations are diverse, ranging from large-scale heroin and opium trafficking to human trafficking, money laundering, and even cooperating with groups like the Abu Sayyaf to transmit ransom money.

To combat Communism, Kot Siu-wong, a Kuomintang Lieutenant-General, created the 14K in 1945 within Guangzhou, China.

Boasting roughly 20,000 members, this organisation ranks as the world's second biggest triad. The 14K is involved in supplying raw materials for methamphetamine manufacturing to the Sinaloa Cartel.

The 14K seized total command over Benelux heroin imports in 1987, having operated within the Netherlands since the 1970s. In 1999, a Portuguese court sentenced 14K mob boss "Broken Tooth Koi" to 15 years' imprisonment. Thailand serves as the location for the 14K's biggest Chinese criminal enterprise.
