The team that won a Super Bowl with the worst running game
In short: In 2006, the Indianapolis Colts achieved the impossible: winning a championship while suffering from one of the league's most glaring statistical flaws. Despite a rushing attack that ranked near the bottom of NFL history, they orchestrated a masterclass in offensive efficiency to reach the summit.
The 2006 Indianapolis Colts season is a study in extreme statistical contrast. While the team finished with a 12–4 record and won Super Bowl XLI, their ground game was historically poor. They surrendered just 5.33 rushing yards per attempt—the worst mark since the NFL merger and only the seventh-worst in all of league history. To compensate for this lack of 'bulk,' head coach Tony Dungy relied on what the NFL later ranked as one of the most statistically efficient offenses in the history of the sport.
The season was defined by high-stakes milestones and personnel shifts. It featured "The Manning Bowl," the first time in NFL history that two brothers—Peyton and Eli Manning—started at quarterback against each other in the same game. The team also navigated a significant roster transition, moving on from the "Triplets" era as running back Edgerrin James departed for Arizona, while signing veteran kicker Adam Vinatieri to replace Mike Vanderjagt.
The victory over the Chicago Bears on February 4, 2007, carried immense historical weight. It marked the first Super Bowl title for the franchise since 1970 and its first since relocating to Indianapolis. Furthermore, it made Tony Dungy the first African American head coach to win a Super Bowl. The team also set a unique geographic precedent, becoming the first squad to play in an indoor stadium but win the championship in an outdoor venue.
The Colts' path was not without drama. They survived a chaotic Week 3 finale against the New York Jets, which ended with five laterals and three fumbles on a desperate final play by the Jets. Despite these hurdles and a struggling run game, the Colts maintained their dominance in the AFC South, securing their fourth consecutive division title.
