How a razor-thin margin sparked a decade of SEC dominance
In short: In January 2007, the BCS National Championship Game changed college football forever. A disputed ranking decision allowed the Florida Gators to leapfrog Michigan, setting the stage for a historic blowout that signaled the beginning of a massive power shift in the sport.
The 2007 BCS National Championship Game, held on January 8 in Glendale, Arizona, was a watershed moment for the sport. It was the first time the BCS held a standalone championship game rather than using one of the existing bowls. The matchup featured the undefeated, No. 1 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes against the No. 2 Florida Gators. This was the first time these two programs had ever met on the football field.
The path to the championship was mired in controversy. While the computer rankings had Michigan and Florida tied for second, human voters in the Coaches and Harris Interactive polls pushed Florida ahead. This decision was separated by a mere 0.0101 points. Critics argued that Florida's coach, Urban Meyer, had campaigned effectively for the spot, or that Michigan's lack of a conference title made them less deserving of the No. 2 seed.
On the field, the Gators delivered a decisive 41–14 victory, marking their first national title since 1996. The game was a defensive masterclass by Florida, who held the Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith and the Buckeyes to just 82 total yards. This victory was more than just a single trophy; it launched a historic era. The SEC would go on to win seven consecutive national championships starting with this season, a streak that was not broken until Florida State's victory in 2014.
The dominance of the Southeastern United States proved to be a long-term trend. From 2006 to 2022, SEC institutions secured 13 out of 17 national titles, while 16 of those 17 championships were claimed by schools located in the Southeast.
