How a single powerhouse running back fueled a national championship run
In short: In 2015, the Alabama Crimson Tide achieved a rare feat of dominance. Led by a Heisman-winning powerhouse and a defense that could shut down any opponent, they navigated a grueling season to claim their 10th national title. Discover the numbers behind one of college football's most iconic championship campaigns.
The 2015 Alabama Crimson Tide season was defined by the historic performance of running back Derrick Henry. The junior became only the second player in program history to win the Heisman Trophy, following a season where he led the entire nation in both rushing yards, totaling 2,21 and rushing touchdowns, with 28. His dominance was a constant, including a streak of 11 consecutive games with a rushing touchdown.
Under the leadership of ninth-year head coach Nick Saban, the team navigated a high-stakes schedule. While the season included a notable 43–37 loss to Ole Miss, the Tide's defensive capabilities were frequently on display. In a landmark victory against Texas A&M, the defense achieved a feat never before seen in Alabama history: scoring three touchdowns on interception returns in a single game. This performance was anchored by players like Minkah Fitzpatrick and Eddie Jackson, who both recorded two interceptions each.
The campaign was a masterclass in both efficiency and grit. The team finished with an overall record of 14–1, securing the SEC championship and a consensus national title after defeating Clemson in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. This victory was bolstered by a highly-rated recruiting class that ranked as the No. 1 class according to ESPN.com and 247Sports.com, ensuring the program's sustained excellence through a period of significant departures, including stars like Amari Cooper and T. J. Yeldon.
