The 26th Arabian Gulf Cup: A Regional Showdown in Kuwait
In short: From December 2024 to January 2025, the Arabian Gulf Cup returned to Kuwait. This 26th edition of the tournament brought eight nations together to compete for regional supremacy, culminating in a hard-fought final that saw Bahrain claim the trophy for the second time in their history.
Sponsored by Khaleeji Zain 26, this 26th Arabian Gulf Cup hosted eight Arab Gulf Cup Football Federation nations in a top-tier football contest. To mix regional status with fair play, the competition featured a knockout stage following an initial group phase. To ensure a balanced draw, teams were divided into two groups of four based on FIFA rankings from October 24, 2024. This system automatically seeded the host nation, Kuwait, and the defending champions, Iraq, at the top of their respective groups. The official draw occurred on November 9, 2024, in Kuwait City. Organizers selected one team from each of the four ranked pots to form the groups. This structure ensured that the top-ranked nations were distributed fairly across the bracket.
The competition was defined by high-scoring action and rigorous squad requirements. Each participating nation was permitted to register a 26-player roster, which had to include at least three goalkeepers. Throughout the 15 matches played, the teams combined for a total of 41 goals, maintaining a consistent pace of approximately 2.73 goals per match. The tournament's knockout rules stipulated that if a match remained tied after regulation, extra time and penalty shoot-outs would be employed to determine a winner. The tournament ran from December 21, 2024, until January 4, 2025. Every squad was limited to a specific size. These rules governed the entire 15-match schedule.
The climax of the tournament saw Bahrain emerge as the victors, securing their second title by defeating Oman with a 2–1 score in the final. The event highlighted the enduring significance of the Khaleeji tournament as a focal point for football in the Gulf region, blending national pride with a structured, high-stakes sporting format. The final match concluded the competition in early January. This victory marked a significant milestone for the Bahraini side. It remains a key moment in the federation's history.
