The thousand-year struggle for the soul of the Kyivan region
In short: Ukraine’s history is a complex tapestry of shifting borders and foreign rule. From the ancient Kyivan Rus to the Soviet era, the territory has been a prize for competing empires, leaving a legacy of deep cultural divisions that define the modern conflict today.
The roots of the region trace back over a millennium to the Kyivan Rus, a foundational Slavic state. In A.D. 988, Prince Volodymyr the Great adopted Orthodox Christianity after being baptized in Chersonesus, a moment that established a shared religious heritage for both modern Ukraine and Russia. However, the subsequent centuries saw the territory repeatedly partitioned by external powers. Mongol invasions in the 13th century, followed by the expansion of the Polish and Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 16th century, fundamentally altered the region's trajectory.
Geopolitical shifts often split the land along the Dnieper River. During the 17th century, conflicts between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Russian Tsardom placed lands east of the river under Russian imperial influence, while western territories remained under Polish rule. By 1793, the Russian Empire had annexed the western 'Right Bank'. This era of expansion included 'Russification' policies, which suppressed the Ukrainian language and pressured the population toward the Russian Orthodox faith.
The 20th century brought profound trauma. Following the 1917 revolution and a violent civil war, Ukraine was integrated into the Soviet Union in 1922. In the 1930s, Joseph Stalin orchestrated a man-made famine, known as the Holodomor, which caused the deaths of millions. To repopulate the devastated eastern regions, the Soviet government moved large numbers of Russian settlers into the area. These historical layers—the Russian-aligned east and the more European-influenced west—continue to shape the nation's political fault lines today.
