Alexander the Great faced a mutiny from his own battle-hardened veterans in 324 BC.
In short: After ten years of relentless conquest, Alexander the Great's Macedonian army rebelled at Opis. This video dramatizes the legendary speech he delivered to confront his men, detailing the sacrifices made during his campaigns from the Hellespont to the Indus.
In 324 BC, Alexander’s veterans mutinied after he ordered them home and planned to replace them with foreign troops. The resulting confrontation at Opis remains one of history's most famous moments of leadership under pressure. Alexander addressed the men by recounting his father Philip’s legacy and his own extensive military journey, effectively shaming them for their desire to abandon him.
While the speech is preserved in 'The Anabasis of Alexander' by the historian Arrian, written around AD 140, it is widely accepted as a reconstruction rather than a verbatim transcript. Arrian based his account on lost eyewitness reports from Ptolemy and Nearchus. Modern scholars generally agree that the event occurred and that Arrian’s text captures the essence of what was said.
