The prolific, controversial, and lightning-fast rise of El Bufalo
In short: From the Colombian academy to European record-breaker, Alfredo Morelos’s career has been defined by staggering goalscoring numbers and intense disciplinary drama. Whether dominating in Finland or igniting the Scottish Premiership, the striker's journey is a masterclass in high-stakes footballing talent.
Born in Cereté, Colombia, in 1996, Alfredo Morelos Aviléz followed a path shaped by his father's passion for the game. After rising through the Independiente Medellín academy, he made his professional debut at just 18 years and 22 days old in July 2014. His early years in Colombia were marked by immediate impact, including a clinical run of goals in the Copa Colombia and a late winner in the Categoría Primera A.
A move to Finland in 2016 with HJK Helsinki transformed him into a European force. During his 62 appearances for the club, he netted 46 goals, earning the Veikkausliiga striker of the year award. His time in Finland was characterized by prolific scoring, including a career-first hat-trick in the Finnish Cup, and established his reputation as a clinical finisher in European qualifiers.
His 2017 transfer to Rangers for a reported €1.2 million brought both unprecedented success and significant controversy. While he became a club icon—nicknamed 'El Bufalo' and setting a UEFA record with 14 goals in a single European campaign before Christmas—his tenure was frequently punctuated by red cards and disciplinary incidents. Despite facing five sendings-off in a single season and turning down a massive £30 million move to the Chinese Super League, his ability to deliver crucial goals remained undisputed.
Morelos's career remains a study in extremes: a player capable of scoring 100 competitive club goals and dominating leagues, yet often finding himself at the center of intense on-field friction and even allegations of racial abuse.
