The rebellion that shattered China's golden age and redefined its borders

An Lushan Rebellion - One of the Bloodiest Conflicts in History · 16:50 · Video: Kings and Generals · Watch at the source

In short: Explore how a trusted general turned against the Tang Dynasty, sparking one of history's bloodiest conflicts. This documentary examines the collapse of a cultural peak and the violent transition into a fractured era of warlordism.

The Tang Dynasty represented a pinnacle of Chinese art, culture, and military power. However, this 'golden age' was fundamentally destabilized by the An Lushan Rebellion, which began in 755. Led by the general An Lushan, who rose to prominence in the 740s as a favorite of Emperor Xuanzong, the revolt saw the seizure of the eastern capital, Luoyang, and the western capital, Chang’an, within months.

The conflict ended in 763, but the damage was permanent. The rebellion left the Tang government severely weakened and fueled a rise in xenophobia against those of Sogdian and Turkic ancestry. This period of instability paved the way for chronic warlordism that plagued the dynasty's final years and the subsequent Five Dynasties period.
