The unification of two lands sparked three millennia of empire

Ancient Egypt (Over 3000 Years of History) BEGINNINGS Ep. 4 · 23:05 · Video: Made In History · Watch at the source

In short: Before it was a global icon of monuments, Egypt was a project of political consolidation. Around 3100 BC, the merging of Upper and Lower Egypt created a blueprint for stability that allowed a civilization to endure through three distinct golden ages and countless foreign invasions.

The foundation of ancient Egyptian civilization is traditionally dated to approximately 3100 BC. This era marked the political unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under the leadership of Menes, a figure frequently identified by historians as Narmer. This consolidation transformed disparate regions along the lower reaches of the Nile River into a cohesive African civilization that would persist for over 3,000 years.

Egyptian history is characterized by a rhythmic cycle of stability and upheaval. The civilization flourished during three primary 'golden ages': the Old Kingdom (Early Bronze Age), the Middle Kingdom (Middle Bronze Age), and the New Kingdom (Late Bronze Age). These periods of prosperity were punctuated by Intermediate Periods—intervals of relative instability where central authority weakened, often due to internal shifts or external pressures.

At its zenith during the New Kingdom, Egypt exerted massive influence over Nubia and significant portions of the Near East. However, this dominance was eventually met by a succession of foreign powers. The civilization faced invasions from the Hyksos, Libyans, Nubians, Assyrians, Achaemenid Persians, and Macedonians under Alexander the Great. Following Alexander's death, the Greek Ptolemaic Kingdom took control until 30 BC, when Cleopatra oversaw Egypt's transition into a Roman province.

The legacy of this era is not merely architectural; it includes pioneering advancements in mathematics, medicine, irrigation, and glass technology. The Egyptians were also responsible for creating the first known planked boats and the earliest known peace treaty, signed with the Hittites. These innovations provided the structural backbone for a culture whose art and architecture would be copied and admired across the globe for millennia.
