Before the Olympics, a warrior elite ruled through palace-centered states
In short: Long before the height of Classical Greece, two sophisticated civilizations laid the foundation for European culture. Spanning Crete's complex palaces and mainland Greece's strong citadels, these Bronze Age entities initiated construction techniques, mercantile routes, and initial transcriptions of Indo-European Greek script.
The Minoan civilization, centered on the island of Crete, represents Europe's first advanced civilization. Emerging around 2000 BC, it flourished through a vast Mediterranean trade network and left behind massive building complexes and sophisticated art. The name 'Minoan' itself is an archaeological construct; it was coined in the early 20th century by Sir Arthur Evans, who linked the site of Knossos to the mythical King Minos and the legend of the Minotaur's labyrinth.
While the Minoans primarily used the Linear A script and Cretan hieroglyphs, their influence rippled across the sea to mainland Greece. There, the Mycenaeans—autochthonous Greeks—developed a distinctively Greek civilization between approximately 1750 and 1050 BC. Stimulated by contact with Minoan culture, they built a rigid hierarchical society dominated by a warrior elite. At the pinnacle of this social structure sat a king known as a 'wanax,' who oversaw palace-centered states in hubs like Mycenae, Pylos, and Tiryns.
The Mycenaeans were masters of military infrastructure and engineering, but their legacy is most enduring in linguistics. Their syllabic script, Linear B, provides the earliest written records of the Indo-European Greek language. However, both civilizations eventually succumbed to a complex 'Bronze Age Collapse.' While theories range from Dorian invasions and the mysterious 'Sea Peoples' to volcanic eruptions at Santorini and climatic shifts, their fall ushered in a recordless 'Greek Dark Age,' transitioning society from centralized palaces to the decentralized forms of Archaic Greece.
