In short: Andrew Young was more than a close confidant to Martin Luther King Jr.; he was a primary strategist for the movement's most pivotal moments. From the streets of Alabama to the halls of the United Nations, Young navigated the high-stakes transition from civil rights activism to global diplomacy.

Born in 1932, Andrew Young rose to prominence as a pastor and a key leader in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Alongside Martin Luther King Jr., he served as a core negotiator and strategist during the landmark civil rights campaigns in Birmingham, St. Augustine, Selma, and Atlanta between 1963 and 1966. His commitment to nonviolent resistance, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, often put him in direct danger; he faced death threats while organizing voter registration in Alabama and was eventually jailed for participating in demonstrations in both Selma and St. Augustine.

Young's career reached a global stage in 1977 when President Jimmy Carter appointed him as the first Black American U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. His tenure was marked by intense controversy, including a 1978 interview where he referred to jailed domestic protestors as political prisoners—a statement that led to a failed impeachment resolution. He also navigated complex geopolitical waters, notably facing backlash for his role in advancing a settlement with Robert Mugabe in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and for a 1979 meeting with the Palestine Liberation Organization that was leaked by the Mossad.

After leaving the UN, Young pivoted to municipal leadership, serving as the 55th Mayor of Atlanta from 1981 to 1989. During his tenure, he secured $70 billion in private investment and was ranked by historians as one of the best big-city mayors in American history. Today, as one of the last living people to have been with King in Memphis on April 4, 1968, Young remains a towering figure of the American political and spiritual landscape.
