The sitcom that traded road trips for domestic reality
In short: When a blockbuster film franchise moves to television, the rules of reality often shift. While the movies focused on high-stakes travel, the TV series pivoted toward the friction of blended families and everyday life, swapping cinematic adventure for the grounded chaos of a new marriage.
Premiering on TBS in June 2010, Are We There Yet? served as the third and final installment of its franchise. While it shared the title and core characters with the 2005 film and its 2007 sequel, the series operated in a distinct continuity. Rather than focusing on long-distance travel, the show centered on the Kingston-Persons family in Seattle navigating the complexities of a new blended household.
The production featured significant recasting to differentiate the TV experience from the movies. Terry Crews took over the lead role of Nick Persons from Ice Cube, portraying an ex-athlete transitioning into fatherhood and information technology. Essence Atkins replaced Nia Long as Suzanne Kingston-Persons, a career-driven event planner balancing her professional life with motherhood. This shift allowed the show to lean into more domestic humor, drawing closer in tone to the sequel film than the original.
The series also introduced unique dynamics, such as Nick's secretive brother-in-law Terrence (played by Ice Cube), a black ops agent who provides a surreal contrast to the family's everyday problems. Despite its shared lineage with the films, the show was noted for being less 'family-oriented' than its cinematic predecessors. It concluded its run on March 1, 2013, after three seasons of exploring how a new family setup handles normal life situations.
Technically, the series utilized a unique production schedule where three episodes were filmed over one week, a departure from standard sitcom pacing. Filmed at the Connecticut Film Center in Stamford, it was distributed by Debmar-Mercury and remains a notable example of how film IPs can be recontextualized for serialized television.
