In short: In 1191, the Third Crusade reached a critical turning point. Following the fall of Acre, King Richard I of England began a march toward Joppa. However, his progress was met by the formidable forces of the Ayyubid Sultan Saladin, setting the stage for a legendary confrontation on the coast.

The Battle of Arsuf in 1191 was a pivotal moment in the Third Crusade, marking a significant victory for the English king, Richard I, also known as Richard the Lionheart. This engagement occurred as the Crusaders were marching from Caesarea toward Joppa, attempting to reclaim territory following their successful siege and capture of Acre in July 1191. The campaign was defined by the intense rivalry between Richard and the Ayyubid Sultan, Saladin, a leader whose influence shaped the entire region.

Saladin was a figure of immense historical significance, born around 1137 or 1138 in Tikrīt, Mesopotamia. A member of a prominent Kurdish family, he rose through the military ranks, initially serving under his uncle, Asad al-Dīn Shīrkūh. By 1169, at the age of 31, Saladin had become the commander of Syrian troops in Egypt and the vizier of the Fāṭimid caliph. His rise was fueled by both his own emerging talents and the strategic use of his family's connections. In 1171, he further solidified his power by abolishing the Shiʿi Fāṭimid caliphate and restoring Sunni Islam in Egypt.

Saladin's military legacy was cemented by his capture of Jerusalem on October 2, 1187, which ended nearly ninety years of Frankish occupation. His empire eventually encompassed Egypt, Syria, Yemen, and Palestine. The conflict at Arsuf was not merely a tactical skirmish but a clash of two of the most famous leaders of the medieval era, representing the broader struggle between the Christian Crusaders and the Ayyubid dynasty.
