The Battle of Bunker Hill was actually fought on a different hill entirely

In short: On June 17, 1775, colonial forces faced the British army in the first major battle of the American Revolution. While history remembers it as the Battle of Bunker Hill, the fighting primarily unfolded on the lower, more vulnerable Breed’s Hill. It was a costly, pyrrhic victory for the British.

Following the Battles of Lexington and Concord in April 1775, a massive force of over 15,000 New England troops gathered around Boston to contain Gen. Thomas Gage and his 5,000 British soldiers. By mid-June, colonial leaders moved to fortify the Charlestown Peninsula, specifically targeting the high ground of Bunker’s Hill. However, on the night of June 16, Col. William Prescott led roughly 1,000 men to the wrong location, constructing a redoubt on the lower Breed’s Hill instead.

At daybreak on June 17, the British discovered the fortification and launched a counter-offensive. Gen. William Howe led over 2,300 troops to dislodge the colonists. The Americans held their ground behind a rail fence and within the redoubt, repelling initial advances with intense fire. While popular legend claims soldiers were told not to fire until they saw the "whites of their eyes," historians consider this account almost certainly apocryphal. Eventually, the British overwhelmed the position as the Americans ran low on ammunition and lacked bayonets.

The engagement was a tactical success for the British but a strategic disaster. They suffered 1,054 casualties, including 89 officers, while the Americans lost about 450 men. Among the dead was Gen. Joseph Warren, who had joined the fight as a volunteer. This heavy toll provided significant encouragement to the revolutionary cause. Today, a 221-foot granite obelisk stands on Breed’s Hill to commemorate the event, marking the site where the majority of the conflict actually occurred.
