The naval clash that halted Ottoman expansion in the Mediterranean
In short: In 1571, the Holy League faced a massive Ottoman fleet off the coast of Greece. This documentary explores the high-stakes siege of Cyprus and the decisive battle that marked a turning point in galley warfare.
Following the 1570 invasion of Cyprus by Selim II, Pope Pius V worked to unite Catholic states into an alliance. This effort faced significant delays due to the religious tensions of the Reformation and the conflicting political interests of Spain and Venice. The resulting Holy League fleet, commanded by Don Juan de Austria, eventually engaged the Ottoman forces near Lepanto on October 7, 1571. The battle featured a massive Christian force of 207 oar-propelled galleys and 6 large Venetian galleasses, facing a Turkish fleet that was larger but potentially less disciplined.
