A sandstorm and a desperate alliance changed the course of Chinese history forever
In short: In May 1644, the Ming dynasty collapsed, leaving a power vacuum between a peasant rebel leader and the rising Qing. At Shanhai Pass, a desperate Ming general made a fateful choice: he invited his northern enemies to help him crush the rebels, inadvertently handing them the keys to China.
By early 1644, the Ming dynasty was crumbling under the weight of peasant rebellions led by Li Zicheng. After Li captured Beijing on April 24 and the Chongzhen Emperor committed suicide, the only major force remaining was the army of General Wu Sangui, stationed at the strategic Shanhai Pass. Faced with an overwhelming rebel force, Wu sought an unlikely alliance with the Qing, a Manchu power that had been testing Ming defenses for years.
The Qing, led by Prince Regent Dorgon, had no intention of restoring the Ming. When Wu requested aid, Dorgon demanded his total surrender. On May 27, 1644, the two forces met at the pass. As Wu’s troops struggled against Li Zicheng’s rebels, a violent sandstorm obscured the battlefield. Dorgon seized the moment, charging his cavalry around the flank. The sight of Manchu warriors with shaved foreheads emerging from the storm shattered the rebel lines, leading to a total rout.
The victory at Shanhai Pass allowed the Qing to enter Beijing unopposed on June 5, 1644. While the population expected the restoration of the Ming, they were met by Dorgon, who claimed the Mandate of Heaven for the Qing dynasty. The young Shunzhi Emperor was enthroned in November, beginning a rule that would last until 1912. This battle remains a pivotal moment, as the Qing transformed a tactical alliance into a centuries-long imperial reign, fundamentally altering the trajectory of Chinese history.
