Can a $5 million prize justify the chaos of Beast Games?
In short: Inspired by the viral intensity of Squid Game, MrBeast’s massive reality experiment has shattered television records. While it became one of Amazon Prime Video's most-watched unscripted series, the production has faced intense scrutiny over contestant treatment and legal battles.
Created by Jimmy "MrBeast" Donaldson and his team, Beast Games launched on Amazon Prime Video on December 19, 2024. In this show, 1,000 participants battle for a $5 million reward, which is touted as reality TV's biggest individual payout. The scale of the production is immense, with a budget reported to exceed $100 million following a deal with Amazon MGM Studios announced in March 2024. Conklin, Klitzner, and Mack Hopkins helped create the series. The contest first began accepting entries in May 2024.
The production has been a whirlwind of record-breaking achievements and significant controversy. It has broken 44 Guinness World Records, including the largest prize fund awarded for a competitive reality show at $10,000,000. However, this scale has come with heavy costs. A class action lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles on September 16, 2024, following allegations from contestants regarding mistreatment, including being denied food, water, medication, and beds, as well as reports of injuries and sexual harassment. An industrial incident on 11 September 2024 prompted an investigation by the Ontario Ministry of Labour. Furthermore, a crew member was injured when a tower exterior collapsed during filming.
Despite these legal and critical challenges, the show has achieved massive commercial success. The show's popularity has secured its future, with a second season premiering on January 7, 2026, which includes a crossover with the CBS series Survivor. The second season's production was scheduled to run from June until August 2025. This upcoming installment features a special crossover event with the popular CBS series Survivor.
