The birthplace of techno and a playground for the wealthy
In short: Before it was a hub for electronic music, Belleville was a resort destination for Detroit's elite. From Henry Ford’s summer cottages to the revolutionary sounds of 'The Belleville Three,' this small Michigan city has served as a backdrop for both high-society leisure and underground cultural revolution.
Belleville’s transformation began with its geography. Situated on the Huron River, it was originally a thriving center for lumber businesses featuring saw mills along the riverbanks. The landscape shifted significantly in 1926 when the Detroit Edison Company built the French Landing Dam to generate electrical power. This project created Belleville Lake, which covers 1,200 acres and serves as the city's principal geographic feature. By the 1930s, this new lakefront established a reputation for the area as a resort community where wealthy Detroitians maintained getaway estates; notably, icons like Henry Ford and Charles Lindbergh owned summer cottages in the Harmony Lane neighborhood.
While the wealthy sought leisure on the water, the city's cultural legacy was forged in the mid-to-late 1980s through its musical output. The initial movement of Detroit's techno scene originated with Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson, a trio often called 'The Belleville Three'. Alongside collaborators like Eddie Fowlkes and Blake Baxter, these musicians pioneered a genre that would eventually influence global electronic music scenes.
Today, Belleville remains a distinct community within Wayne County, characterized by its urban layout (100% of residents live in urban areas) and its history as a center for trade and industry. It maintains unique cultural ties, including a twinning with Machynlleth, Wales, and a legacy of hosting the National Strawberry Festival from 1977 through 2019 to celebrate its primary economic supporter.
