From Arkansas standout to NBA champion and high-stakes trade
In short: Bobby Portis has navigated the volatile highs and lows of professional basketball. From winning an NBA championship with the Milwaukee Bucks to being part of a massive 2026 blockbuster trade, his career is a testament to resilience, marked by elite shooting and unexpected personal challenges.
Born on February 10, 1995, Bobby Portis Jr. emerged as a premier talent at Arkansas. After earning consensus second-team All-American honors in 2015 and being named the SEC Player of the Year, he entered the NBA as the 22nd overall pick by the Chicago Bulls. His early professional years were defined by rapid growth and occasional volatility, including a high-profile physical altercation with teammate Nikola Mirotić in 2017 that resulted in an eight-game suspension.
Portis found championship success with the Milwaukee Bucks, securing an NBA title in 2021. During that era, he established himself as a lethal perimeter threat, finishing the regular season with a 47.1% three-point percentage—the third-highest in the league behind Joe Harris and Marcus Morris Sr. His tenure in Milwaukee was marked by significant milestones, including a 49-game season in 2024–25 and a 2026 selection for the State Farm 3-Point Contest.
The player's career has also faced significant disruptions. In February 2025, he received a 25-game suspension following a positive test for the banned substance Tramadol. Beyond the court, his personal life saw a major security breach in November 2024, when his home was burglarized, resulting in the theft of nearly $1.5 million in valuables, including his 2021 championship ring. In July 2026, Portis was part of a major blockbuster deal, moving to the Miami Heat alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo in exchange for several players and draft picks.
