In short: Following the collapse of Yugoslavia, Bosnia and Herzegovina descended into a brutal three-way war. Driven by nationalist manipulation and territorial ambitions, the conflict saw widespread ethnic cleansing and the siege of Sarajevo. It was eventually halted by a NATO-imposed cease-fire, leaving behind a complex legacy of trauma and justice.

The Bosnian War emerged from the disintegration of Yugoslavia, a multiethnic state where political tensions had been simmering for years. By the 1980s, economic decline and the exploitation of nationalist sentiments by leaders like Radovan Karadžić and Slobodan Milošević destabilized the region. When Bosnia and Herzegovina held a referendum on independence in early 1992, the Bosniak and Croat populations largely supported it, while Bosnian Serbs, who had already begun forming autonomous regions, boycotted the vote.

Following the official declaration of independence in March 1992, violence erupted rapidly. Bosnian Serb forces, supported by the Yugoslav People’s Army, launched a campaign to seize territory, utilizing artillery to bombard Sarajevo and expelling Bosniaks from towns like Zvornik and Foča. This process, termed ethnic cleansing, defined the early stages of the war. Within six weeks, Serb forces controlled roughly two-thirds of the country, leaving the Bosnian government militarily vulnerable due to an international arms embargo.

The conflict was further complicated by a 1993–94 war between Bosniaks and Croats, though they later formed a joint federation in 1994. The international community remained largely on the sidelines until the final stages of the war. Following years of fighting, a NATO-imposed cease-fire was negotiated in Dayton, Ohio, in 1995. The war resulted in over 100,000 deaths and millions of displaced people, marking a tragic chapter in post-World War II European history.
