In short: In 1965, a record company played a clever trick on a group called Chad Allan & The Expressions. By releasing a single anonymously with the label 'Guess Who?', they sparked a mystery that turned into a legendary musical identity and launched the career of Burton Cummings.

The identity of The Guess Who was born from a marketing ruse. In 1965, a record company released the hit single 'Shakin' All' All Over' anonymously, using the phrase 'Guess Who?' to trick listeners into thinking the track was by a famous British Invasion band. Disc jockeys began announcing the group by this mysterious moniker, and the group eventually adopted the name.

Burton Cummings, born in Winnipeg on December 31, 1947, became a central figure in this history. After dropping out of St. John's High School at age 17, he joined the band Chad Allan & The Expressions in early 1966, shortly after his 18th birthday. When group leader Chad Allan departed, Cummings became the sole singer, and the band became simply The Guess Who.

The group achieved massive international success, notably with the 1970 album American Woman. This record made The Guess Who the first Canadian band to secure a number one single in the United States. While the band's lineup shifted—including the departure of guitarist Randy Bachman and the eventual disbanding of the group in 1975 due to songwriting disagreements—Cummings remained a dominant force in Canadian rock.

Cummings' solo career proved equally impactful. His 1976 self-titled debut reached the Canadian top ten, and the single 'Stand Tall' became an international hit, selling over one million copies in the U.S. His legacy is marked by numerous honors, including being named an officer of the Order of Canada and receiving induction into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame.
