The dual-threat quarterback who rewrote the South Florida record books
In short: In a single season, Byrum Brown achieved what few players ever have: passing for 3,000 yards while rushing for over 1,000. From a high school standout in North Carolina to an elite FBS playmaker, his journey through the college football ranks is a masterclass in statistical dominance.
Byrum Brown's ascent through the ranks of college football is marked by unprecedented efficiency and versatility. During his tenure with the South Florida Bulls, Brown transitioned from a promising recruit out of Rolesville High School into a record-breaking force. His 2023 campaign was particularly transformative; he became the program's first 3,000-yard passer, surpassing previous records held by Quinton Flowers and Matt Grothe. That season, he led the American Athletic Conference in total yards, accumulating 3,823 yards, and ranked 12th in the FBS for points responsible for, averaging 17.3 per game.
The hallmark of Brown's game was his ability to impact both the air and the ground. As a senior, he joined an elite group of only 12 players in the FBS to record a season with both 3,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards. His senior statistics—comprising 3,158 passing yards and 1,008 rushing yards alongside 42 total touchdowns—earned him second-team All-AAC honors and a place on several prestigious national award watch lists, including the Maxwell and the Davey O'Brien Award.
Despite his on-field brilliance, Brown's career has been defined by resilience and academic excellence. He graduated magna cum laude in the fall of 2025 with a degree in Health Sciences, maintaining a 3.77 GPA. Even after facing a lower leg injury during his junior season that sidelined him for seven games, he remained a central figure in the sport's landscape. Following his decision to enter the transfer portal in late 2025, Brown committed to the Auburn Tigers in early 2026, marking a new chapter for one of the most decorated players in recent USF history.
