In short: In Chinese feng shui, a simple copper coin is far more than spent currency. It is a metaphysical tool designed to balance the flow of qi, ward off malevolent spirits, and manifest prosperity. But for a coin to work, its history, metal content, and even its previous owners matter.

The power of the Chinese cash coin in feng shui stems from its symbolic geometry. The round shape represents the sky (tiān), the square center hole represents the earth (dì), and the emperor's inscription represents man (rén). This trinity, known as Tiān yuán dì fāng, aligns the home with the fundamental relationship between heaven, earth, and humanity. Because these coins were the primary currency of imperial China from 221 BC to 1912 AD, they are viewed as physical manifestations of wealth and the 'metal' element (jīn) in the wuxing philosophy.

However, not all coins are created equal. Practitioners distinguish between 'auspicious' and 'inauspicious' coins based on the era of their production. For instance, the Qianlong Tongbao is favored because it was minted during a period of military and economic ascendancy, while the Xuanhe Tongbao is avoided due to its association with a tumultuous era. Furthermore, the 'effectiveness' of a coin depends on its history of circulation; it is believed to have absorbed the positive qi of millions of people who handled it over centuries. Conversely, masters must sometimes 'mitigate' coins they believe have been contaminated by negative energy.

Practical application requires precision. Coins are often strung together—sometimes in the shape of a sword to scare away spirits—or used as 'Five Emperor Coins' to counter heavy beams or pillars. When used this way, they are often tied with red string to charge them with yang energy. Because the word for money (qián) is a homophonic pun for 'front' (qián), the coins are also used to symbolically place prosperity 'right before your eyes.'
