The evolution of a digital network from history to comedy
In short: How does a television network transition from a daily history lesson to a comedy marathon? Catchy Comedy, formerly known as Decades, underwent a significant structural and thematic shift to redefine how classic sitcoms reach modern audiences through digital subchannels.
CBS Television Stations debuted the network in 2015 under the name Decades, marking its inaugural national multicasting project. It initially aimed to stand out from other 'retro TV' services by featuring a daily themed schedule. These six-hour blocks included a feature film, theme-related programs, and biographical content, all bookended by 'Through the Decades'—a show hosted by Bill Kurtis that used archival footage to explore specific dates in history.
The network's identity shifted dramatically over several years. In 2016, it introduced 'daily binge' blocks, and by 2017, it moved toward a sitcom-heavy lineup featuring the 'Television Across the Decades' and 'Smart Comedy' blocks. On March 27, 2023, the network rebranded as Catchy Comedy. This change marked a pivot to primarily airing classic sitcoms and sketch comedy variety shows, while also introducing technical modifications like compressing ending credits to optimize programming.
The network's distribution has been complex, involving a multi-year agreement with Fox Television Stations starting in fall 2019. While it was originally a CBS-owned-and-operated affiliate, it now operates as a sister network to MeTV. Its content library is massive, sourcing from CBS Television Distribution, NBCUniversal, Warner Bros., Disney, Sony, and several other major studios, ensuring a steady stream of classic television from the 1950s through the 2010s.
Today, Catchy Comedy maintains a specific structure: comedy marathons on weekends and sitcoms during the week, with the only exception being FCC-mandated E/I programming on Saturday mornings. It also features a unique 'binge' format where a single series can air for 42 consecutive hours, a tradition that continues to shape its weekend identity.
