The austere revolutionary who led Ireland’s first parliament before dying in a final stand
In short: Cathal Brugha was a teetotal, non-smoking candle maker who became a central figure in the Irish struggle for independence. From leading the first Dáil to clashing with Michael Collins, his life was defined by rigid principles. His end was as dramatic as his career, marked by a final, solitary defiance.
Born Charles Burgess in 1874, Brugha was a man of intense discipline who eschewed alcohol, tobacco, and profanity. After his father’s business failed in 1890, he pivoted from medical studies to the candle-making industry, eventually co-founding Lalor Ltd in 1909. His political awakening led him to the Gaelic League, where he adopted the Irish name Cathal Brugha, and later to the Irish Republican Brotherhood and the Irish Volunteers.
Brugha’s military and political influence peaked between 1917 and 1922. He served as Chief of Staff of the IRA and, in 1919, became the first president of the Dáil Éireann. He was a staunch advocate for civilian control over the military, frequently clashing with Michael Collins over the influence of secret societies like the IRB. Brugha believed that all volunteers should swear allegiance directly to the Republic and the Dáil, rather than to clandestine organizations.
His opposition to the 1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty proved pivotal. During the Treaty Debates, his vocal criticism of Collins is often cited as a factor that galvanized support for the pro-Treaty side. When the Civil War erupted in 1922, Brugha attempted to prevent the conflict, but ultimately found himself commanding a rearguard in O'Connell Street. After ordering his subordinates to surrender, he chose to face Free State forces alone. He was shot in the leg, suffering a severed artery that led to his death on 7 July 1922, just days before his 48th birthday.
